One of the most difficult things about being an author is to get down the words. You spend days thinking about writing, then the time comes to sit down to write and every possible distraction gets in the way. From social media, to shopping, and paying your bills, all of it gets in your way when you switch on the laptop and open the page of the manuscript.
Rights are one of the most difficult aspects of publishing for authors and publishers to comprehend – and as a result they are often ignored entirely. However, rights sales are not only a valuable and under-exploited revenue stream but understanding can also help protect authors from copyright theft and exploitation.
Big publishers no longer dominate the media landscape. The barriers to media attention for books are coming down and there is more publisher diversity than there has ever been. This doesn’t mean that getting coverage is easy, as there is also more competition for space than ever before. However, an appropriate book that is well pitched to a journalist, producer or editor—regardless of the publisher—is now in with a chance.
